I hope it works out for your friend. When it comes to debt and money owed negotiations are a part of the process as long as you handle it correctly.
I had a friend as well that got stuck with a big medical bill despite insurance. Her doctor recommended a procedure but there was no one to tell her that she had a $2,000 deductible on that type of procedure when she thought she had a basic HMO. She’s working on paying for that now.

I just sent this post to a friend who was charged a lot for a medical bill despite insurance. I love negotiating and hearing success stories about people who saved money simply by asking and explaining their position. I love the advice to ‘count to 3, grit your teeth and slowly say “that’s a lot of money”. ‘ It sounds perfect, I hope it works for her!
