As I woke up today in Hopkinton, MA it’s raining again. Anyone from the area knows that New England weather can be crazy but it’s not suppose to rain in June. I mean we are going on July and it’s been raining for the last few weeks. I will admit though this past weekend was pretty nice. Maybe I think that because anything is better than rain right now or because I actually saw the Sun. I had forgotten how bright it can be.
This made me think of the market, is it raining for you? I mean we had one of the worst rainstorms in history right. You might call it a flood. Time to start collecting two of every species or build an ark. Did you or anyone you know do some crazy things in the last year or so? How were you seeing people react to the market?
How do you react to the rain? You can stay inside. You can avoid it all together. You might even be able to lock yourself in a room and try to sleep through it. That’s not going to make it go away. I mean it can’t rain forever, can it? So what did you do? Did you dig out the old umbrella? Buy a new raincoat? Change your shoes?
In your financial world you might try to call your broker, find a new advisor or rebalance your portfolio. I’m sure some of you did all of the above. I’m sure some of you did none of the above. Then there are the people that probably did some crazy things. What is the craziest reaction you’ve heard?
The forecast for the next five days is listed in the paper with a picture of a sun, a cloud and rain. Isn’t that great? It might be sunny, it might be cloudy or it might just rain. They should have thrown in snow for good measure. Well this is your market. It might up, it might be down or it might just be flat. What are you going to do? Are you going to run and hide? Lock yourself in the room? Or maybe just get a new coat and change your shoes?
The truth is no one knows what’s going to happen, with the weather or with the market. People will always guess and try to predict and some will be right but most will be wrong. So what are you to do? You can prepare. You go get an umbrella in case it rains. You have shorts in case it’s hot. Then a coat for in between. The best thing about the market is you don’t have to go it alone. There should be someone there to help you find the shorts you are looking for or what coat will do the best job of keeping you dry and warm (got to love New England). Where’s your advisor? Maybe it’s time for you to get an umbrella.
